APC Blames Mimiko For Olu Falae’s Kidnap

The All Progressives Congress in Ondo
State has blamed Governor Olusegun
Mimiko, for the abduction of the
National Chairman of the Social
Democratic Party, Chief Olu Falae.
The APC said this in a statement by its
Publicity Secretary, Abayomi
Adesanya, on Wednesday.

The party also berated the governor
for the high rate of kidnapping, rape,
robbery, extrajudicial killing and
other social vices in the state.
The APC noted that Falae was
kidnapped in his farm in the Akure
area of the state. The party said other
people had been kidnapped around
the farm about two weeks ago and a
security report was given to the
governor but Mimiko and the police
authorities failed to act.

The statement read in part, “About
three weeks ago, specifically on
September 2, 2015, around Chief Olu
Falae’s farm in Ala village, Akure-
North Local Government area of the
state, a farmer, Mr. Adediran Adejo,
was kidnapped from his farm. Adejo
was in captivity for several days and
was not released until a ransom was
paid to his abductors.

“Governor Olusegun Mimiko, being
the Chief Security Officer of the state,
the Ondo State Police Command and
other security agencies had adequate
information and notice about the
kidnapping and other criminal
activities in this area and across the
state, but they were lackadaisical
about these developments.
“The kidnapping of Chief Falae, being
the second within a period of three
weeks in this particular area, Ala
village, is totally unacceptable and it
is an indictment on Governor Mimiko,
the police and other security agencies
for their lackadaisical attitude and
dereliction of duty.”

The APC wondered how the security
vote was being spent in the light of
the surge in crime in the state
It said the ‘fire brigade’ approach on
the current manhunt of Falae’s
kidnappers is because a prominent
and famous Nigerian is the latest
victim.

It added, “The APC’s investigation
revealed that a whooping sum of
N1.5bn is being deducted as security
vote from the state’s treasury on a
monthly basis. If this amount is
committed to securing lives and
properties, these dastardly acts would
have abated. “We don’t want to
believe that the security vote is going
into private pockets as it is being
speculated.”

The APC also berated a former
Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-
Kayode, for blaming the President
Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal
Government for Falae’s kidnap. It
added that the Federal Government
could not be held liable for such a
crime.
However, the Ono State Commissioner
for Information, Kayode Akinmade,
slammed the APC for trivialising
Falae’s kidnap.

The commissioner wondered how the
APC could blame the governor for a
surge in crimes such as rape and
kidnapping. Akinmade wondered if
the kidnapping of the wife of the
Managing Director of The SUN, Doyin
Nwosu, in Lagos last week was also
the fault of Mimiko.
He urged the party to be constructive
in its criticisms of the state
government instead of peddling lies.
He said, “It is unfortunate that the
APC can trivialise the kidnap of an
elder statesman. Even in Lagos, which
is an APC state, there are also
kidnappings.”

Akinmade slammed the APC for
saying that N1.5bn was deducted by
the state government monthly as
security vote.
He said, “Everyone knows the state of
the economy today and many states
are struggling to pay salaries. Does it
make sense for us to deduct N1.5bn
as security vote?”

I Had Planned To “Hide” For 12 Months – GEJ

The immediate former President of
Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan
yesterday during his visit to Ikenna,
where himself and his wife had gone
to pay the Awolowos a condolence
visit on the passing away of their
mother, grandmother and great
grandmother, said if not for the death
of the aged woman and how
important she was to the nation,
himself and his wife wouldn’t have
been seen publicly like this. He said
they had planned to “Hide” for 12
months shortly after leaving office,
but mama’s death was one which
they couldn’t over look. His
words below.

“Within this period, myself and my
wife have been hiding; we don’t even
go out. We thought we’ll be hiding for
at least 12 months. But in this
particular case, we cannot hide. So,
we’ve come for the condolence and to
encourage our brothers and sisters
that we are together,” he said.
On the passing of Mrs. Awolowo,
Jonathan said it was a great loss, but
that he took solace in the fact that
death is an inevitable end that would
come when it would come.

“So, we know it would come for all of
us one day and here we are today,” he
said.
“We have been coming here because
the former secretary to the
government did mention that the last
time I came here it was associated
with the last presidential
electioneering campaign. But before,
I’ve been here severally to see mama
in one way or the other,” the former
president said.

“We are mourning her today; me and
my wife, we are not mourning
because mama has passed on. For me,
we believe that it’s a rare privilege to
add extra 29 years to the Biblical two
scores and ten; it’s not easy.

“Ordinarily, we wouldn’t have been
mourning but mama was a rare
mother. She was a woman of virtue
described in the Bible and she was a
mother to all of us; a mother that her
milk of kindness we still need, her
milk of encouragement we still need,
her milk of advice we still need and
today she’s no more with us.

“But for me and my wife and
members of our delegation, some of
them include the former leader of the
House of Representatives, Hon.
Mulikat Adeola. Of course, Gbenga
Daniel has been here severally but he
was the one who led us into this hall.
My good friend, Jide Adeniji, the
former chairman of FERMA and
others. Mrs. Kuku from Bayelsa State
and others that joined us; we have
come to pay our last respect,” he
stated.

Police Shoots Man To Death While Waiting For Free Sallah Ram In Lagos (Photo)

image

There was tension in the Ebute
Oniyanrin in the Ilaje, Bariga area of
Lagos on Tuesday after a police
sergeant, Adekan Adesola, shot dead
a 33-year-old man, Abiodun Balogun.
The police, however, said Abiodun,
known as Anarchy, was a wanted
cultist, and died during an exchange
of fire.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Abiodun,
who worked as a moulder in a block
industry, had been called by a friend
at about 8am to come to the
Oniyanrin area as Sallah gifts were
going to be shared by politicians.
It was gathered that Abiodun, who
reportedly went with an unidentified
friend, was however, manhandled by
the police sergeant.

It was learnt that Adesola, who was
not in uniform, allegedly dragged
Abiodun on the ground, before
shooting him.
Abiodun’s friend was said to have
escaped from the scene.
Our correspondent gathered that the
deceased’s mother, Aishat Balogun,
who was called on the telephone that
her son had been shot by a
policeman, had gone to the Bariga
Police Division, where the sergeant
was attached and where the corpse
was taken to.

The woman was reportedly barred
from entering to see Abiodun.
When PUNCH Metro visited Ajileye
Street where the Baloguns’ lived,
sympathisers lamented the death.
Aishat, who spoke with our
correspondent in Yoruba, claimed
that the police sergeant had been
looking for Balogun as a result of her
son’s refusal to join the Eiye cult
group which dominated the area.
She said, “I was still with him on
Monday, and we were discussing how
we would celebrate the Sallah.
I did not know that evil was lurking.
It was around 8am today (Tuesday)
that someone called me and said the
sergeant had shot Abiodun dead. The
lie they are spreading now is that he
was a cultist.

“But the fact is that Adesola is a
notorious policeman in our area. He
has been shooting at people, claiming
that they are cultists.
But Abiodun was not a cultist. They
had been luring him to join them, but
he refused. I do not know the fate of
my son presently. I have not been
allowed to see him at the police
division.”

Our correspondent, however, learnt
that the corpse was still at the Bariga
Police Division as of the time of
report.
Abiodun’s wife, who did not want her
name in print, said they were
together in the morning when her
husband received a call that he
should come for Sallah gifts at the
Oniyanrin area.

She said, “We were together till
around 7am when that phone call
came in. So, he went to the area to
collect his gift.
“That was where Adesola met and
shot him. The policeman was in
mufti, and Abiodun was not carrying
a gun. He did not have any weapon.”
Other workers and friends of the
deceased at his block industry who
spoke with PUNCH Metro claimed that
Abiodun was murdered in cold blood
by the policeman.

The Lagos State Police Public
Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor,
however, said Abiodun was a wanted
cultist by the police, adding that the
33-year-old was shot dead during an
exchange of gunfire.

He added that the matter had been
transferred to the Special Anti-
Robbery Squad, Ikeja, for further
investigation.
He said, “He was a wanted cultist by
the police. He died during the
exchange of fire. He was known in
the area as Anarchy. The case has
been taken to SARS for further
investigation.”

Doctors in New Nigeria Hospital at
Kirikiri area of Lagos State, are
currently battling to save the life of a
young artiste who was shot by a yet-
to -be-identified Army officer, last
Wednesday morning.

It was learned that the victim was
returning home from the studio with
his friend when he was shot by the
soldier. He was later rushed to a
nearby hospital that same night for
treatment.

When Vanguard visited the hospital,
yesterday, the victim who was lying
critically ill in one of the male wards,
was barely able to speak.
He narrated his ordeal: “I was coming
back from the studio with my friend
at about 2am when we noticed the
presence of the Army officer.
My friend attempted to run because
he was afraid when the officer
stopped us. He told me to run but I
refused.

While we were at the studio, my
friend had smoked Indian hemp and
was misbehaving, despite efforts
made to stop him from smoking that
night.

“I tried to explain our mission to the
officer and why we were returning
home at that particular time of the
night, but he still kept on suspecting
us.

At this stage, my friend took to his
heels and I followed him. The officer
then ran after us and when I became
tied, he shot at my leg four times.
The pain was unbearable and I
became unconscious. The next
morning, I woke up only to see myself
at the New Nigeria Hospital battling
with pains. Since then, I haven’t heard
from my friend.”

The owner of the hospital, Dr
Geoffrey Orajekwe, who spoke to
Vanguard, said some policemen and
other individuals brought the victim
to the hospital around 3am.
He said when he was about closing
for the night, the officers asked him
to start administering treatment
immediately without initial deposit.

“Up till now, nobody has paid for his
medical bill. Though I heard some
gunshots that night but I didn’t know
what was happening until I saw the
victim.
Seeing the condition of the boy, I
immediately picked up courage, took
him to one of the wards and had to
open the left and right legs of the boy
to remove the bullets before it
spreads to the joint.
I finally found the bullets and I assure
you that he would be fine very soon,”
the doctor said.

TOO SOON? APC Positions Akume, Tinubu’s Wife To Replace Bukola Saraki

As Senate President Bukola Saraki
appeared before the Code of Conduct
Tribunal over alleged false assets
declaration, the All Progressives Congress,
APC, was said to be considering former sen
ate leader, George Akume and wife of the national leader of the APC, Senator Remi Ti
nubu and two other ranking senators from
the South West zone as Saraki’s
replacement.

Apart from Senator Akume who is from the North
Central zone and Remi Tinubu, no other names
were mentioned but sources said other two rank
ing senators also from the South West are being
considered on APC shop list.

Feelers from Abuja reaching Kaduna, the second
home of President Muhammadu Buhari revealed
that, barring any last minute change of plan,
Saraki may be asked to resign
…f he refused, may be impeached on moral
ground to concentrate on his trial.

According to National Mirror, Senator Ahmed
Lawan who was anointed by APC as its sole
candidate but lost to Saraki would emerge senate
leader from the North East, since the Speaker is
also from the zone.

One of the credible sources explained that,
though Saraki and Dogara jettisoned APC’s
,earlier zoning of National Assembly principal
officers which favoured the north which has both
the Senate President and Speaker but that under
the new deal, South West zone may produce deputy senate president.

Meanwhile, one of the anti -Saraki’s groups,
Northern Ethnic Nationalities Unity Congress,
NENUC, had called on the senate president to re
sign or face impeachment over CCT 13 count
charges against him.
