How to Deal with the Ophthalmological Side Effects of Programming

Ophthalmology is the study anatomy, functions, pathology, and the treatment of the eye. In this article, Diana Smith, a proud and happy mother of two beautiful girls. After reading our article about Computer Vision Syndrome she tells Cliniconomy a story about how her husband had severe eye problems caused by working on a computer all day (he actually ended up in surgery but fortunately everything went well).

she carried out some research about most common vision problems like eye strain, computer eye syndrome and surgery recovery tips.

She continues from here.......
OphthalmologicalDoes your man spend more than eight hours in his line of work? The job circumstances for programmers may be tough, but there’s a way to evade the most adverse symptoms. Without taking special care of your vision and adjusting working conditions you may end up with the serious computer vision syndrome. Unfortunately, my husband stretched his luck a bit in that department. Now, he’s suffering from the consequences. Bear with me as I guide you through info I collected along the way in order to alleviate his hardship.

Prevention

  1. Thorough Checkup

Better safe than sorry. Don’t wait till it happens to you, but instead think more about the means to prevent it. First step of the way is visiting your doctor on regular basis for an all-around examination. American national health institute advises to start the checkup after receiving our first computer-based position. Consult with your specialist about the frequency of use and working distance.

  1. Proper Lighting

Set the lightning to optimal. By that I mean limit the presence of bright light, outdoor and indoor, to the half of the standard office illumination. Exploit drapes or blinds, as well as dimmer bulbs. Position the monitor away from direct light source. Consider transition to full spectrum fluorescent light that would mimic the actual sunlight.

  1. Glare Reduction

The surrounding surfaces such as finished walls and reflective veneers can also be the cause of eyestrain. We installed the anti-glaring protective cover for the screen. The shine-free walls are my warm recommendation. We both wear glasses so we equipped ourselves with the special pair each. The glasses have anti-reflective coating, which is common for sunwear too.

  1. Upgrade your display

If it’s at all possible, the best is to replace your old cathode ray tube monitor with the modern LCD. We have already done it thankfully, since the old one had a slight annoying waver, harmful for the eyes. It’s even worse if the refresh rate is lower than 75 Hz. Also, opt for larger displays, not under 19 inches.

  1. Display settings

Easiest step – adjust your display settings on computer. Blend the brightness setting with the workstation light conditions. Modify text size and contrast: black on white is a proven success. Color temperature should be put on lower blue light readings (that is, lower temperature) that basically cause the trouble to our eyes. Buttons are often found on the monitor itself.

  1. Blinks and Breaks

Once I thought watching attentively without blinking is a special skill worth commending. Now I know it lead to my hubby’s eye dryness. Blinking lubricates the eye to prevent irritation. Do it several times every 15 minutes. Furthermore, make several shorter breaks instead of just two long. The recent studies showed tiny breaks benefit greatly to your eye health.

Symptoms

I recognized something was truly wrong when my husband started complaining about frequent headaches and somewhat blurry vision. We visited the doctor, and BAM, not such good news. The other signature symptoms are aforesaid dryness, eye fatigue, and shoulder and neck pain. Try to spot them on time, since being too late is no fun at all. Both your professional and personal life will suffer.

Ophthalmological

Treatments

If the situation has escalated, don’t let yourself at the mercy of fortune, search for the quality laser eye surgery practices as soon as possible, we sure did. Past few years have brought significant advancement in this field. Consult with the professionals about the type of procedure that would be best-suited for you. For the situations where all is not lost yet, there’s selection of computer eyewear available. Go through extensive research before you invest in some expensive piece. Another method for eye betterment is the exercise. Use the 20-20-20 rule. At every 20 min mark, gaze into an object 20ft away for 20 seconds. It works!

Think Ahead

Establish a more conscious approach with regard to your type of work. Create the optimal atmosphere. If I could turn back the time, I would get more involved and serious about prevention. Don’t let the job get the best of you, take care of yourself and your loved ones.

Glaucoma Patients May Be Risking Their Eye Sights For These Activities

glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disorder that affects the optic nerve. It is congenital and sufferers may not have any visible symptom in the long run and may not be noticed until later in life.

It is mainly associated with the build-up of increased pressure in the eye called, intra-ocular pressure. The pressure builds up when the liquid in the eye doesn't drain properly. The eye was designed in such a way that it contains a lot of water. A clear liquid could be seen in front of the eyes, the liquid constantly circulates throughout the eyes, making the components of the eye work properly, help the eye retain its shape and delivering nutrients to the different, tiny components that make up the eye.

When the liquid is due for change, the liquid is supposed to be drained into the bloodstream through a small sieve-like drainage tube structure called the trabecular meshwork. It is then transported away from the eye compartment; giving way for a new, fresh one to take over. But the different between a glaucoma sufferer and a normal glaucoma free individual is that the liquid finds it hard to leave the eyes causing the accumulation of the liquid the eyes. With time the build-up of the liquid gets to an extent where the pressure it imposes on the eye affects the optic nerve and if not checkmated, the optic nerve dies off leading to loss of sight.

Here is something to worry about: During glaucoma, the eye is just normal, with no significant change to say. Most individuals suffering from glaucoma will go on with clear eye sight, some with the sight stronger than the non-glaucoma sufferers. The problem there is, when symptoms starts showing up, the optic nerve has being fully or partially damaged.

Glaucoma is a silent killer of the eye which can be made worst and fastened when the sufferer engage in some activities that will trigger the increase of pressure in the eye and facilitates the destruction of the optic nerve. Any activity that gives room for the increase in the pressure of the eye affects and is very harmful to a glaucoma patients.

Glaucoma sufferers who happen to be weight lifters, play musical instruments like trumpets and other instruments that require blowing and the control of breath. According to a research in the journal Optometry and Vision science in 2008 which states that blowing and breathe control to a glaucoma patient is a risk factor because straining while holding your breath constricts blood vessel in the chest, neck and head and all this raises the pressure in the eye.

To stay on a safer side, glaucoma patients should go for eye check-up very often and the optometrist will prescribe a daily dosage of eye drop which will improve drainage and reduce the amount of fluid produced. Or more especially, a surgery will help to open up drainage holes.

Glaucoma patients and individuals with the history of glaucoma running through their blood should endeavor to visit an Optician regularly, at least 2-3 times in a year.

In addition, it is treated with anti-caking agents that prevent salt from mixing with atmospheric moisture in the salt container. These agent also impede salt dissolving within our body system leading to build up and then deposit of free radicals and toxins in our organs and tissues, causing severe health problems.

Here are some of the health benefits of sea salt

Does Smoking Cigarette Really help to loose weight?

cigarette smoking

Like seriously, does smoking cigarettes have any health benefits? Over the years, many individuals have allowed their minds to ply through the paths in search of an answer to this particular question but on getting to the junction they’ve always walked back to their starting point disappointedly with the answer: long-term smoking is highly a first class ticket to death. But unfortunately, even with the ear deafening bells being rang by medical practitioners who are trying to make smokers deviate from their smoking habits, smokers still go around ears blocked, some forcing themselves to believe on illusions that smoking do have some benefits to health.

A study from a  University located  in  Adelaide Australia on the issues of Arthritis and Rheumatism stated that men who smoke has a lesser risk of undergoing total joint replacement surgery than those who don’t smoke. When the researchers were asked to explain the connection between knee replacement surgery and smoking, the greatest explanation they could conjure  was that knee replacement surgery was more predominant in joggers and the obese, and because most smokers rarely jog and are less likely to be obese. After some years, the researchers were left with no meaningful fact to back up their research. Maybe they would have being okay to say that nicotine in cigarette helps prevent cartilage and joint detoriation.

On the other hand, pointing towards the title of this article, does smoking cigarette helps one lose weight? People hold fast to the fact that the nicotine in cigarette acts as an appetite suppressant which is the mechanism by which many weight loss supplements operate on. So to say, cigarette smoking can help lose weight.  In this article, we are going to see if this fact is true, or is it still one of those underground researches like the one above that holds on to feeble facts and will disappear into the thin air when its credibility is further questioned.

Disappointedly, the link between smoking and weight loss has being scientifically backed up and approved by many researches and facts. Not only that nicotine contained in cigarettes acts as an appetite suppressant and reduces intake of food smoking on the other hand can really bring about weight lose in some people by adversely increases the metabolism of the human body, that is the rate at which the body burns calories. Smoking also causes the blockage of taste buds on the surface of the tongue, inhibiting the smoker’s ability to acknowledge the taste of meals; thereby the smoker looses the appetite to eat so easily.

First Aid Treatment For Gunshot Injuries

bullet

Gunshot injuries can be regarded as the most painful, traumatic and extremely dangerous type of injury one can ever suffer. Not only is it difficult and confusing to figure out the extent and severity of the damage, most gunshot injuries turns out to be so fatal and sometimes surpasses the capabilities of  a first aid treatment. But the idea is that the time and actions taken by the victim and the people around him or her has a lot to do with the victims survival. The knowledge of First aid treatments in this case is very important so as to keep the victim in a stable condition before he/she is taken to the hospital.

What most people call the bullet isn't the bullet but the casing, the bullet is the projectile which flies out to hit the intended target; it is propelled by the explosion of the chemicals inside. while the cartridge is the correct name when  referring to the whole. A modern cartridge consists of the following:
1. The bullet, as the projectile; lies on the superior part of the cartridge, help on its inferior margin by the case.
2. The case, which encloses  all parts together;
3. The propellant, i.e the chemicals that its reaction will provide the explosion that will send the bullet flying.
4. The rim, which provides the extractor on the firearm a place to grip the casing to remove it from the chamber once fired;
5. The primer, which ignites the propellant.

The pointed apex of the bullet flies our with its high velocity and when it finds its resting place, maybe someones body  it will go a long way to tear through the flesh, muscles and bones. For the treatment of any gunshot injury to be successful several factors has to be considered: Factors like the part of the body on which the bullet penetrated.

  • The rate at which a bullet that found its rest inside a major blood vessel will bleed, would be different from how a bullet that penetrates a region where no blood vessel is located.

  • The Dept of the penetration,

  • The structures that has being affected and damaged.

  • The type of bullet.

To administer first aid treatment to a gunshot victim you need to be knowledgeable, fast thinker, someone that is not easily carried away by the fear of traumatic events and more especially blood, because you will see lots of them. He/she must be able to look into the victims eyes and read the victims condition and pain. If the victim is conscious, you have to develop the soft heart to be able to persuade the victim that everything is okay and that he/she is not dying. So the following are the procedures by which you can administer first aid treatment to a gunshot victim.

  • Stay Safe. If you are not the victim, try to take cover some where safe and peruse the environment for further danger,  a rescuer is of no use if he too gets hurt. Take precautions like, making sure every bodies arm is in safe mode if the victim was shot during a team hunt or something like that. If it is a crime scene, make sure that the shooter is no more around before you make any move towards the victim.

  • Send A Call For The Ambulance:

Surviving a gunshot wound depends greatly on how quickly a victim gets to a hospital. The first aid is just to stabilize the injury and reduce the rate of bleeding which is the major thing that kills people from gunshot injuries. Ideally, a gunshot wound victim should be on the way to a hospital in an ambulance within 10 minutes of being shot. Make sure to tell the emergency call consultant the condition of the victim and all the information she needs to hear.

  • Do not move the victim unless his or her safety is in jeopardy. Move the person only when it is very necessary.

  • Make sure the victim's airways is free. If the victim is unconscious but breathing, keep the airway open and clear. But if  the victim is not breathing at all, engage him/her in a  Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, (C.P.R) it  is an emergency procedure performed in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest.

  • Control bleeding:

Based on the dept of the bullet penetration, blood vessels damaged and organs the bullet came in contact with, there must be bleeding, most times severe. Remember when stated above that the rescuer is going to see a lot of blood. The blood that have being confined into tubes all day will ooze out hot and happy. The first aid you have to consider most paramount in such a condition is how to control bleeding and this is how: The blood needs to clot for the healing process to start, this is because, just like ice wont form soonest in the middle of a rapid flowing river, the blood wont clot quick in the midst of blood flowing rapidly continuously from the interior.

Applying direct pressure is the best way to control bleeding in most injuries. Use a pad over the wound and apply pressure directly to the injury. If you have nothing available, even your hand or fingers can be used to control bleeding. Add new bandages over the old; do not remove bandages when they become soaked. Use pressure points in the arm (between the elbow and armpit), groin (along the bikini line), or behind the knee to control bleeding in the arm, thigh, or lower leg, respectively.

Gunshot injuries around the neck of face can be very dangerous more than any other part of the body. These wounds typically bleed severely. Use direct pressure to control bleeding and keep the victim upright. Be careful not to obstruct breathing while controlling bleeding. With injuries to the neck, be careful that blood flow to the carotid arteries (arteries that carry blood up into the head) isn't disrupted, as this can reduce blood flow to the brain. The brain cant survive for long without blood supply.

Gunshot injuries  to the chest and back is another fatal and difficult to treat injury.  The ribs are there to hinder your actions. Just apply direct pressure to control bleeding; understand that it may be difficult to control chest bleeding because the ribs make it difficult to compress the structures that are bleeding. Gunshots to the chest can cause what is known as a "sucking chest wound." These happen when air travels in and out of the wound with each breath. Treat these as follows:

  • Seal wound with hand or airtight material (e.g., plastic film).

  • Apply an airtight bandage on three sides of the wound (see image below). Do not close the bandage on the fourth side. This will allow the chest to achieve its usual negative pressure state. Air will escape through the valve during inhalation.

  • Treat Shock:

The victims should experience shock which resulted from blood loss and reduced blood flow throughout the body. Try as much as you can to stabilize the victims temperature  by using something to cover the body if his skin is feeling so cold, but fan him steadily if the body is burning real hot  while you wait for the ambulance.

More Tips You Should Know About:

  • Do not give the victim anything to eat or drink, including water.Seal gunshot wounds to the chest with some type of plastic to keep air from being sucked into the wound. This helps prevent the development of a collapsed lung. If the victim begins complaining of worsening shortness of breath, remove the seal.

  • Let conscious victims sit or lie in a position most comfortable for them.

  • Unconscious victims should be placed in the recovery position.

  • Do not elevate legs to treat for shock if the gunshot wound is above the waist (unless the gunshot wound is in the arm). Gunshot wounds to the abdomen and chest will bleed more quickly once the legs are elevated, making it harder for the victim to breathe.

Child Marriage: Child Birth Problems Associated With Early Marriage

child marriage

The main purpose why most marriages take place is mainly for the purpose of reproduction. Nobody wants his bloodline to end with  him when he must have left this planet, that is why men try to procreate and make sure they that leave behind off-springs to keep their lineage up and going.

Unfortunately, in some countries,  most young girls and under age ones are dragged into what we all call child marriage, because of certain reasons ranging from poverty, parental pressure, insecurity, as well as for political and financial reasons. Today, child marriages are still fairly widespread in some developing countries, such as parts of Africa, South Asia,Southeast and East Asia, West Asia,Latin America, and Oceania.

[ad#Google Adsense 2]

According to W.H.O and U.N.I.C.E.F on child marriage issues, the age in which any individual should be considered an adult is from the age of 18. As a girl, marriage when you are below the age of 18 is going to harm you and make your life miserable unless the few lucky ones. Some are giving away for marriage by their parents at the age of 13. At this age they are undeveloped both mentally, physiologically and otherwise. Their pelvic bone which houses the organs necessary for reproduction may not be matured enough to carry the uterus, the bladder and every other organ.

Secondly, during delivery, the uterus compresses heavily on the urinary bladder, the compression of the uterus on the bladder might cause a rupture on the urinary bladder which will cause an abnormal communication between the vagina, uterus and urethra and make urine to leak into and out unto the vagina which unlike the urethra doesn't have the sphincters to control the flow of urine,  so the urine flows out freely through the vagina at will.

In some cases, the vaginal pathway through which the baby will come out from will be too narrow to allow for passage for him/her. The Doctor or midwife on ground will be required to give a slight incision on the vagina so as to expand the vagina, most atimes these slight cuts extend to the anal region, causing an abnormal communication between the anus and the vagina, then feces will creep out through the vagina.  This is not a condition any young girl will like to experience.

A child can not be a child and give birth to a child, resulting to two children. The universe can never be balanced that way. Most of these girls end up in a miserable life of poverty because they are likely to have being deprived from there right to education. Early married girls have a double mortality rate during child birth than women giving birth in their 20s. These young girls are at an increased risk of chronic anemia and obesity. Lastly, studies show that  child marriages lead to young girls that have a higher risk of becoming a victim of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and murder.

The problems stated above is referring to any under aged girl that tries to give birth to a child through the vagina, be it married or still single. So, over to you, at what age do you think it is proper for a girl to start looking up to marriage? If you should seek my opinion i will say she should be of the age of 21 and above so as to give her room for development. What do you think about that? Do you have any counter opinion regarding the proper age of marriage i stated above? Let us know on the comment box.

The Relationship Between Stress And Your Heart's Health

[caption id="attachment_710" align="aligncenter" width="211"]stress stress[/caption]

What is stress?

Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. When you sense danger —whether it’s an illusion or reality or when your work becomes so demanding, your body's kick into high gear, trying to make you adjust yourself and respond to the change properly to produce the very best result.

Everyday we go about our daily activities , every morning will always have some of us running to work. as students we run to school, and even the individuals that are to remain at home are not even free from stress. At some point we will be faced with certain tasks so different and demanding from the ones we see in the previous days, in some cases you will be forced to think and make a very important decision, sometimes it comes as increased loads of work. It comes in so many forms. It follows us about, it is part of us; part of our daily life, the only thing that matters at the end is if you where able to solve problem that aggravated the stress.

Inasmuch as stress helps you surmount your daily problems, it is never a good friend to any part of the body. Stress affects so many things in our body. In adults, studies has it that it causes hair lost and possibly baldness in men (telogen effluvium). chronic stress can also aggravate existing skin problems including psoriasis, rosacea, acne and eczema.   Chronic stress can trigger a variety of mental and emotional problems including insomnia, headaches, irritability, depression, anxiety and personality changes.  Stress also causes excessive weight gain. Finally, Stress can also have an impact on reproductive health, ranging from sexual dysfunction,  infertility. It can also cause changes in sex drive, vaginal infections and impotence.

In all the effects of stress thus stated above, i want to focus the purpose and usefulness of this article to the relationship between stress and cardiovascular health (referring to the heart and blood vessels). As stated above, stress is not a good friend to the body and the heart is not an exception. According to anatomy that defined the heart as a modified blood vessel, being a hollow organ that pumps blood to the other parts of the body. Unarguably, the heart is one of the so many important organs that man cannot do without. Prolonged stress increases the secretion of the fright and flight hormone (adrenaline) which affects the  blood pressure, blood sugar and other things in ways that gives the heart concern. adrenaline increases your blood pressure as well as your heart rate, and which may further lead to narrowing of the coronary arteries (arteries that supply blood to your heart), or even bind directly to heart cells allowing large amounts of calcium to enter and render the cells temporarily unable to function properly.

When their is an increased blood sugar, insulin resistance (Insulin resistance (IR) is a physiological condition in which cells fail to respond to the normal actions of the hormone insulin. The body produces insulin, but the cells in the body become resistant to insulin and are unable to use it as effectively, leading to hyperglycemia). When insulin resistance sets, it can lead to type 2 diabetes and hardening of the arteries.]

8 Causes Of Bad Breath You Should Know About

[caption id="attachment_681" align="aligncenter" width="187"]bad breath causes of bad breath[/caption]

Different people from different locations around the world call it bad breathe but medicine and science has named it halitosis. Whatever the name should be I bet you it is not what anybody would like to experience. You must have woken up from sleep and something moved you to speak, exhale or whatever, with your palms around your mouth? The awful odor that oozes out is almost normal if the odor disappears after you have freshened up for the morning by brushing your teeth and cleaning your mouth. You must know that the rate of flow of saliva decreases during sleep and saliva helps with its cleansing effect to wash away and kill bacteria in the mouth. But in its excessive absence, bacteria’s build up is tremendous which will cause the early morning bad breath. But in the case whereby the bad breath continues immediately or few minutes after you have brushed; that is when you should raise up the red flag. Also, if you experience this condition often, you should also raise the red flag up higher.

Bad breath can be so intimidating, embarrassing and tend to make you miss out on most of the good things in life. With bad breath, nobody will like to stay around you; of course who will feel comfortable doing so when the smell from the mouth is like a time bomb that just blew up.

Okay, enough with the talking let us go over to the subject topic. So, what are the causes of bad breath that are putting so many in such an unwanted dilemma? I have got about eight (8) of them here, although there are a whole lot of them but i think this are the prime causes of bad breath and I am going to list them out. Knowing the causes of bad breath also called halitosis will go a long way to help you figure out ways to prevent and treat this embarrassing condition if the case applies.

  • The type of food you eat:

Inasmuch as some foods are very important for the growth and development of the body. In some cases, they can also be seen as enemies because they are a contributing factor to the causes of bad breath. Such foods, like garlic, uncooked onions and others will make your breath bad and unpleasant. This foods after being digested has a way of moving away from the bloodstream, diffusing together with the carbon(di)oxide during expiration into the alveolar sac in the lungs and out through the  air pathway to the outside world. It is not that the smell they produce is that bad but it can never be pleasant to anybody's sense of smell.

  • Poor Brushing Habit:

Brushing your teeth is a common everyday habit. Most people think  they can brush but in real sense they don’t. Brushing your teeth is not all about moving your toothbrush headed with some pastes toothpaste all over your teeth but like every other daily activity it has its own method and if not followed properly you might end up thinking that you  have just brushed your teeth while in real sense, you did nothing. The right way to brush your teeth

  1. Clean the outer surface of your upper teeth, then the lower teeth

  2. Clean the inner surface of your lower teeth then that of your lower teeth

  3. Clean the chewing surface

  4. Be sure to clean your tongue properly as that is the most important part

You should try to replace your tooth brush every three months or if it starts to wear off before the three months range.

  • Smoking Indian hemp or cigarette:

Smoking Indian hemp, cigarette can also be a contributing factor to the causes of bad breath and it also changes the color of the teeth. Read:

5 Reasons why Many Smokers Will Die Early While Few Others Will Live Longer. The cells in the mouth are killed due to the heat and when they decompose they produce the awful odor. Also, cigarette smoking dries up the saliva in the month.

  • Gum Disease:

Gum diseases like gingivitis can cause bad breathe, to treat this type of bad breathe caused by a gum diseases you have to first of all treat the gum disease. Gum diseases caused by infections have its origin from an injury to the gum and it is common among children and mostly caused when using a tooth brush that its bristles are hard.

  • Yeast Infections Of The Mouth:

Certain mouth infections like the yeast infection that affects the mouth and be contributing factor to the causes of bad breath. Infections increase the population of bacteria in the infected part of the body and while the infection is in the mouth the increased amount of bacteria will cause bad breathe.

  • Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)

Just as I stated above that saliva helps to wash away and cleanse the mouth from bacteria. It also washes down dead and about to decompose red blood cells. Any factor that decreases the level of saliva in the mouth by making the mouth dry is an additional factor that can be the cause of bad breathes. Smoking makes the tongue dry, alcohol also does the same, some diseases do that too and I know of one called sjogren syndrome or scleroderma syndrome.

  • Disease

Certain diseases like pneumonia, kidney problems, liver problems, acid reflux and diabetes can have bad breath as one of its symptoms.

  • Eating Late At Night:

Some people take their dinner very late. Some take their dinner and zoom off to sleep immediately. When this happens the body finds it hard to digest all the food particles and before dawn the undigested food must have gone so bad inside the stomach. The effect is a bad breathe.

If you are suffering from bad breathe, before you conclude to see a doctor, try examining and making changes to your every day hygiene, try brushing twice daily, and if possible after eating, using dental floss, drink plenty of water and if you are a smoker, quit smoking. After all this, if the bad breathe continues, you may consult a dentist who will examine you and diagnose you of any further causes of bad breathe, which will also include most of the points I have stated above, like the disease, yeast infection, the doctor might advice you to do a full colon rinse to detoxify yourself of the toxins that might be causing your bad breathe. Whatever the cause of the bad breathes may be. Knowing the cause and origin will give you something to hold on to when seeking for a solution.

Cigarette Smoking: 5 Reasons why Many Smokers Will Die Early While Few Others Will Live Longer

[caption id="attachment_662" align="aligncenter" width="194"]smoking cigarette smoking cigarette[/caption]

Smoking is the leading cause death among the young people in our society. Few days ago, a friend and i were busy studying in one of the secluded areas here in our medical college.  After some hours of crude study my brain began to get too saturated that i realized that i was experiencing the law of diminishing return. There and then, an idea from the thin air popped into my saturated brain. The idea came as a question. I immediately shared the idea with my friend, and now i am about to do the same with you.

After some minutes, my friend and i have spent some time discussing about the topic, the discussion was  filled with arguments and facts and we came up with some answers which i thought would be nice to share here with you on cliniconomy.com. Meanwhile, for the fact that  i am approaching this post from an argumentative point of view i will be happy if you drop your own idea, either criticizing, adding and adjusting the five points i am about to drop below so as to help me come up with a more broad and secondary reasons why many smokers that are addicted to smoking will die early while few will live longer than expected.

Now i just recalled what i was thinking then that clouded my mind and rained down this question onto my brain. I was actually thinking about my late uncle who died last year from some complicated disease that i cannot be able to comprehend right now. He died at the age of 78. I was so puzzled, remembering that this man was a chain smoker right from his teens and he lived like that even when he was a soldier fighting on the biafran side during the Nigerian civil war. Of course i wasn' t born then but my parents told me so much about him and his lifestyle.  Yet again, i have seen so many young people die because of complicated diseases which came up as a result of them being smokers. As a matter of fact a friend of mine lost his cousin bro like this just earlier this year. The cousin brother wasn't a chain smoker as such, at least he is not as addicted as my uncle was but to be frank he died and when his doctor was dropping some comments about his death he mentioned something about his tobacco smoke and how it destroyed and disorganized his body systems and organs.  This two different cases watered the inquisitiveness in me and i swear this is were it has led me.

Before i commence let me share with you briefly some of the things i recently learned about cigarette smoking and its effect on the body system of cigarette smokers. smoking  is very dangerous both the primary type and secondary type. It shouldn't be what anybody should even try to give a second thought on. But the society we live in today are full of people smoking cigarette and have no value for their life and even for the life of the people around them in which they are putting at risk with the cigarette smoke polluted air.

Although it has being boldly written that  cigarette smokers are liable to die young but people still duff their heads low, smoking day by day like their life depends on it. Yes, that is true though, their life really depends on it like hell  because the nicotine present in cigarette is the addictive drug that makes smokers keep coming back for more. They will never feel normal or comfortable unless their system  have being satisfied off the urge and craving for nicotine.

Study has it that more than 7,000 chemicals are present in cigarette which diffuses together with the smoke into our body when the cigarette is lit up. About 60 of this chemicals have being scientifically proven to be carcinogenic (able to cause cancer)

Below are the top most dangerous chemicals i know that are contained in tobacco smoke, you can add yours later in the comment box.

  • Tar – this is the collective term for the various particles suspended in tobacco smoke. The particles contain chemicals, including several cancer-causing substances (carcinogens). Tar is sticky and brown, and stains teeth, fingernails and lung tissue. Tar contains the carcinogen benzo(a)pyrene.

  • Carbon monoxide – this odorless gas is fatal in large doses because it takes the place of oxygen in the blood. Each red blood cell contains a protein called hemoglobin that transports oxygen molecules around the body. However, carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin better than oxygen. This means that less oxygen reaches the brain, heart, muscles and other organs.

  • Hydrogen cyanide – the lungs contain tiny hairs (cilia) that help to clean the lungs by moving foreign substances out. Hydrogen cyanide stops this lung clearance system from working properly, which means the poisonous chemicals in tobacco smoke can build up inside the lungs. Other chemicals in smoke that damage the lungs include hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides, organic acids, phenols and oxidizing agents.

  • Free radicals – these highly reactive chemicals can damage the heart muscles and blood vessels. They react with cholesterol, leading to the build-up of fatty material on artery walls. Their actions lead to heart disease, stroke and blood vessel disease.

  • Metals – tobacco smoke contains dangerous metals including arsenic, cadmium and lead. Several of these metals are carcinogenic.

  • Radioactive compounds – tobacco smoke contains radioactive compounds that are known to be carcinogenic.

The factors that i think may be the reason why most smokers live longer that others are as thus stated below

IMMUNITY

Although cigarette smoke affects the body's immune system drastically to the point of no return by reducing the level of protective anti oxidants in the cigarette smokers blood. It will require a body with a very strong immune system to still keep up with life and its processes after series of invasions by the carcinogenic chemicals present in tobacco.

LIFESTYLE

The type of life lived by the smoker does count. I think it depends if he further consumes more dangerous substances like alcohol, drugs and so on. Further damage to the body organs can speed up the destruction of the system.

QUALITY OF FOOD

I also think the quality of food also matters. Because, eating quality food will help increase the rate of repairs in your body after the damages done by the chemicals to the organs.

DETOXIFICATION

A detox agent might also have a role to play here. A smoker who in a way or the other gets lucky to detoxify his system off the harmful chemicals might have more years added to his life than the smoker who doesn't detoxify his/her body.

GENETIC MAKEUP

Almost the same with number one(1) above. nature makes its own choices here. Every bodies genetic make up aren't the same. finally i also think some people have being genetically programmed to resist the bad effect of this chemicals on their organs.

Whether you are planning to live long or die early. The fact still remains, as a smoker, you are apparently destroying your organs and disorganizing your body system.

So, up you dear reader. Do you concur to,  or let me use the word agree to the points i stated above? or do you have any opposition to add to it. Do you also have any question? let us meet down here on the comment box to talk about it.

The Onion: Can It Actually Damage Your Eyes?

image

I know some curious minded readers have clicked on the link to this post because of the nature of the title, the onion. It really sounded like the question's answer is "yes".  But just forget about it, onions will not harm your eyes.

The Onions, although they cause tearing of the eye while cutting them will not cause damage to the eyes. The burning and tearing (epiphora) is caused by propanethiol s-oxide, a sulfur compound released as a gas from the onion reacts with the water in your tears to form sulfuric acid. While sulfuric acid can damage the eye permanently, this acid irritates the nerve endingson on the eyes surface, making them sting. the tear gland produces an  alkaline fluid in form of tears that  will always neutralize, dilute  the acid, and flush it out.

The tearing caused by the onion when being cut is difficult and unbearable to deal with, some people will prefer not to put the onion in there meals just because of the epiphora it usually causes when being cut. It blurs your vision, and makes your nose run!  Some techniques are out to avoid the tears. While most of them will work others are just a "somebody told me talks". What i will tell you is what i have used and still using to combat against the tear.

  • By using either swim goggles, or buy onion glasses. These are clear glasses with a spongey liner around the rim. This keeps the fumes from getting to your eyes.

  •  A cold compress can help to alleviate the symptoms of tearing and burning when cutting the onion. Also to avoid this all together, a cold onion is less likely to cause tearing when cut.

Which method has always worked for you? You put it down on the comment box for us to see.

How Smoking During Pregnancy Affects The Unborn Baby

image

When Doctors advice individuals to quit smoking and they decline and continue, they can be pardoned but when they advice a pregnant mother against smoking during pregnancy and  she ignores. The is now inconsiderable.  For the fact that the nutrients in her body; including the oxygen she breathes in is not for her alone but to be shared rationally between her body's cells and that of the unborn baby that is inside her womb.

Smoking during pregnancy tend to endanger the health of the baby and when the baby surfaces into the world; he/she comes along with one or more difficulties.  One of these difficulties include a condition known as RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME (R.D.S). Common in infants, it is also called Hyalin membrane distress. It is a disease of the new born resulting from the abnormal production of Surfactant due to immaturity of the lungs. Such infants are known for there inadequate gas exchange in the lungs and low lung compliance.

During  fetal life, i think it will be nice if I assume that you know that the lungs remain collapsed and the fetus gains its oxygen and other nutrients from the diffusion exchange that occurs at the placenta. Immediately after birth, the first cry the baby makes opens up every air passage ways and some ducts in the heart and also gets the lungs inflated and working.  This substance, called Sulfactants, found inside the aveolus sac in the lungs, it keeps the lungs from collapsing back to its previous position.

This substance,  lining  the walls of the lungs' aveolus is secreted by type 2 pneumocyte cells and mainly made up of phospholipids. It has the property of lowering surface tension. Inadequate surfactant production causes air sacs to collapse on expiration and greatly increases the energy required for breathing. The development of interstitial oedema makes the lung even less compliant. This leads to hypoxia and retention of carbon dioxide. Right-to-left shunting may be severe occurs through collapsed lung (intrapulmonary) or, if pulmonary hypertension is severe, across the ductus arteriosus and the foramen ovale (extrapulmonary).
So where does smoking come in here? Studies shows that smoking during pregnancy causes the inadequacy of the infant's surfactant on the walls of the aveolus inside the lungs. Smoking during pregnancy can also cause Atelectasis, which is the production of abnormal surfactants.

Okay, over to you dear reader. The fact that the habit of smoking is very hard to stop, what advice will you give to the potential mothers who are still smokers to help them stop smoking. You can save a life by putting it down on the comment box.

Hypoglycemia: How To Recognize And Manage Low And High Blood Sugar

jjjj

Hyperglycemia, referring to high blood sugar may occur when someone has diabetics. While Hypoglycemia, the direct opposite of hyperglycemia refers to low level of blood sugar.  In this post i am going to make clear the difference between the two conditions and also how to recognize their symptoms to avoid high levels of medical emergencies. Such as loss of consciousness due to low blood sugar(hypoglycemia) and dehydration, diabetic ketoacidosis due to high blood sugar(hyperglycemia).

If you have being following closely you will notice that either of this conditions are health friendly, high level of blood sugar can be as dangerous as low level of  blood sugar. So it is advisable to keep our blood sugar level balanced.   You have to test your blood sugar level regularly so as to know when to see your doctor, or if you are already on drugs for either hypo or hyper glycemia, you should know when to stop so as not to drift the balance from one condition to the other.

High blood sugar levels occurs when the amount of sugar in your blood rises above normal. This might be caused by different things like eating too many junk foods, taking too many calories, emotional stress, infections etc can cause your blood sugar level to rise tremendously. If you are already on drugs like insulin or other pills to checkmate high blood sugar level, missing your drugs for ones can cause a disastrous increase in your blood sugar level. Testing your blood sugar level regularly can help keep you and your doctor alert when your blood sugar level rises abnormally and this can help prevent complications like, coma, death, damage to the body organs like the eyes, kidneys, blood vessels and others.

High blood sugar develop over a period of hours and days. You may experience some feelings of fatigue with frequent dry throat.

On the other side of the balance scale is the low blood sugar, equally known as Hypoglycemia. This occurs when the level of sugar in the blood  drops below what your body requires to function. As we all know, the chairman in the body, referring to the brain suffers the most when this condition sets in, this is because the brain consumes the most sugar in the body. Not eating enough food or skipping meals, taking too much drugs and exercising more than usual can lower the level of blood sugar in the body. Symptoms of Hypoglycemia includes: Fatigue, shaky, profuse sweat, increased heart rate. It is very deadly to allow your blood sugar level to fall below 20 mg/dl. If this happens there will be a loss in consciousness and even seizure. If your blood sugar level drops from 300 mg/dl to 100 mg/dl you may have symptoms of low blood sugar

Always check your blood sugar level with the traditional method by pricking your finger and dropping the blood that ensues into a test strip and then placing the strip into a meter to display your sugar level. They are cheap, self explanatory and user friendly.

What Causes Ringing in the Ears?

In your search for what causes ringing in the ears or tinnitus, you first have to understand what tinnitus actually is. Tinnitus is referred to as a condition where the sufferer hears sounds like ringing, buzzing, humming, or hissing without any external source producing these sounds. Tinnitus sounds may become even louder when background sounds are especially low. This is why most people who suffer tinnitus are most conscious about these sounds at night when their surroundings are much quieter.

In some elderly people tinnitus may be associated with the natural loss of hearing, most experience only momentary tinnitus that generally fades in hours or a few days. If the issue of ringing in the ears continues for a longer period than that, it would be best to consult your doctor or a specialist.
Treatments of tinnitus may involve some medicines, various therapies, and/or active counseling depending on the severity of the case. If you are clear about what causes ringing in the ears, it would be easier for you to opt for a suitable remedy. Although the precise causes of tinnitus have been determined by an assortment of studies to be varied, theses are a few causes that have been recognized to trigger tinnitus:
Damage in the Inner Ear
Damage in the inner ear is the most common cause of the ringing ears. The inner most area of the ear contains the auditory nerve and cochlea. The cochlea is like a spiral tube that contains thousands of sensitive hair cells and the auditory nerve which is responsible for carrying the sounds to brain. Any damaged part of the cochlea can restrict the sounds to be transferred to the brain. In such a condition, the brain seeks additional information from other working parts of the cochlea which causes the tinnitus sounds.
In older people the auditory nerve loses its sensitivity and can cause tinnitus as the preliminary symptom of loss of hearing. Younger people may experience tinnitus because of inner ear damage due to prolonged exposure to loud noises, like concerts or my personal favorite as a kid... monster truck rallies.

Other Causes

Other than damage to the inner ear, there can be many other causes that trigger tinnitus.
Here's a few notable ones...
• Tinnitus is often caused by mere wax build up in the ear, ear infection, or in some rare cases tumor of the auditory nerve
• Excess use of certain medicines or combination of medicines can also cause tinnitus. Tinnitus is identified to be a probable side effect of over 200 drugs including some sedatives, antibiotics, anti-depressant and anti-inflammatory medicines (aspirin).
• Aging may cause tinnitus as a result of deterioration in function of some parts of the ear
• Some diseases like Meniere's is found to cause tinnitus
• Medical conditions like circulatory issues, high blood pressure, allergies, anemia, cardio vascular diseases, diabetes and an under-active thyroid gland can cause ringing in the ears
• Severe neck and head injuries may also cause ringing in the ears
• Certain jaw and neck problems like temporo mandibular joint syndrome (TMJ syndrome). Strained neck and back muscles, etc..
The issues associated with tinnitus may be severe if the sufferer consumes excessive amounts of alcohol, caffeine, or tobacco products. Stress or anxiety may not directly give you tinnitus but it can certainly worsen the symptoms and create an unbearable condition.
Now that you know what causes ringing in the ears, you can seek a remedy according to the probable cause you suspect to be triggering tinnitus in your case. It is recommended to wait for some time to allow the ringing of the ear to subside by itself. If the issue is persistent, certainly consult your doctor.
